Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin that plays an important role in the conversion of nutrients to energy. It is part of the B Vitamin family and is also referred to as Vitamin H. Biotin is most commonly recognised for its ability to assist with skin, hair and nail health, but there is a lot more to this little nutrient and its benefits.

The word ‘biotin’ originates from the Greek word ‘biotos’ which means ‘life’ and / or ‘sustenance’. Beyond skin, hair and nail health, biotin is one of several B Vitamins that help keep your eyes, liver and nervous system healthy too. During pregnancy, biotin is especially critical for embryonic growth.

There are many dietary sources of biotin, some of which include:
– egg yolk
– organ meats (such as kidney and liver)
– oats
– wheat germ and whole-grains
– nuts and legumes
– mushrooms
– spinach
– cauliflower
– banana

Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin, meaning that it is flushed out daily through urination. We always recommend a wholefood diet to obtain nutrients, however if you are deficient in biotin symptoms may include:
– Progressive hair loss
– Loss of hair colour
– Scaly, dry skin
– Depression
– Sores on the nose and in the mouth
– Loss of appetite
– Skin rashes
– Nausea
– Tingling and numbness in the hands and feet
– Muscle pain
– Heart irregularities

Incorporating our Sally-Ann Creed® Biotin-Bio supplement into your regime is a relatively inexpensive way to ensure your daily biotin needs are being met, and may greatly assist with any of the above mentioned symptoms.
